Opinion: The Senate should confirm Neil Gorsuch

By: IDGOP Chairman Steve Yates – as previously published in the Idaho Statesman

“In the last election, voters had a choice. America could continue with the disastrous Obama policies of the last eight years, or take the country in a new direction. Idahoans, and Americans, opted for real change.

We chose a President who promised to create jobs, protect our country, and put America first.

Many Americans considered the Supreme Court to be one of the most important issues in the 2016 election. Republicans and Democrats alike went to the polls knowing the next President would place a justice on the Supreme Court. When Idahoans overwhelmingly supported Trump, they made it clear what kind of justice they wanted on the Supreme Court.

Just a month after Donald Trump’s inauguration, he nominated the kind of Supreme Court candidate he promised in his campaign. Neil Gorsuch is not only a conservative choice for the court, but he is a jurist with unparalleled credentials and a worthy candidate to fill the shoes of the late great Justice Antonin Scalia.

In 2006, the U.S. Senate confirmed Judge Gorsuch to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the tenth circuit without objection. Those who supported Judge Gorsuch at the time included then Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer and Dianne Feinstein.

Judge Gorsuch is a man deserving of carrying on the Scalia legacy. He believes jurists should interpret the constitution as it was written, and criticizes legislating from the bench. His history of rulings has proven him to be a man who makes decisions without bias to protect the rights of all.

Democrats should respect the will of the people clearly expressed in the election. A majority of people in a majority of states elected President Donald Trump to nominate exactly this kind of candidate to the Supreme Court. As representatives of those 50 sovereign states, the United States Senate needs to confirm Judge Gorsuch without objection or delay.”
